Drunk drivers can wreck the lives of other drivers. They can also end up killing their own friends.
A Virginia Beach man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter over a fatal crash in the summer of 2011 in Chesapeake that claimed the life of his friend, the Virginian-Pilot reported.
The plea leaves Michael Dan Mills III, a 22-year-old, facing up to 10 years in prison for the death of a 19-year-old who was a passenger in his truck, although he is likely to serve less time.
This tragic case saddens me as an experienced Chesapeake DUI accident injury lawyer and my thoughts are with the girl’s family. Her mother Cindy Calloway has hired a lawyer who has filed a $10.75 million lawsuit against Mills, according to the Pilot.
Court documents said the driver veered off the side of a road and hit a tree in Blackwater Road, Chesapeake.
Mills was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries. The 19-year-old, who was sitting in the truck’s passenger seat, died at the scene.
Mills has suffered ongoing problems after suffering leg fractures. “Mills told medics he had been drinking before the crash. According to hospital records, he had a blood alcohol content of .17,” the Pilot reported.
Passengers are frequently killed and injured when drunk drivers lose control of their vehicles.
This sad accident illustrates there are never any winners in DUI crashes.
